Fauxsegi Cabinet
cherry, wenge, maple, oak, and sapele
I purposefully selected and cut cherry wood to grain wrap around the body. I particularly like the sap wood along the front edge which helps brighten the face. Each quarter of the sapele door is slightly recessed towards the center translucent panel. The panel is laser cut and files with dyed epoxy, lending to the faux stained glass look.Â
I really like how the grain, angle, and recess give the door visual movement. In the back of the door compartment I made a curly cherry panel and installed led lights behind it.Â
The sapele drawers have hand cut dovetails and were piston fitted. The fronts give homage to yosegi, a traditional Japanese marquetry technique. Each pattern is made of solid wood and wood inlays. I mastered a laser cutting technique to get each pattern looking similar to its yosegi big brother.Â
